LANSING, MI (WHTC) – Three buildings have been designated as HEARTSafe Schools in the immediate Lakeshore area by a variety of state and national agencies.
Holland High School, Woodside Elementary School in the West Ottawa district and Saugatuck’s Junior/Senior High School were among 105 across Michigan recognized as being prepared to respond to cardiac emergencies. Each designated school achieved several guidelines aimed at ensuring that students who have heart situations can receive proper and prompt care, and the designation is awarded for a three-year period. These schools join the elementary, middle and high schools in the Fennville Public School district in this designation, where cardiac issues have been in the forefront since the 2011 death of junior Wes Leonard shortly after a basketball game.
The agencies that made these determinations include the state Department of Health and Human Services, the Michigan Department of Education, the American Heart Association, the Michigan High School Athletic Association, and the Michigan Alliance for Prevention of Sudden Cardiac Death of the Young.
