HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – When it comes to emergencies, we were taught in school how to respond to a fire, tornado, but not to an active shooter. Do you know what to do in the case of an active shooter?
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office says in any emergency, doing the right things can save your life. They are offering “Citizen Response to Active Shooter Events” training. Captain Derek Christensen says the class prepares you in several ways.
“To think about coming into a situation or having situational awareness about your surroundings and who you are with. If you’re in a specific building it provides you with the basis for looking for exits and being cognizant for secondary exits. A portion of the class talks about how individuals survive in high stress situations and critical incidences.” Christensen says.
The event is Tuesday, October 18, at the Fillmore Street Complex located at 12220 Fillmore Street in West Olive from 6-8:30 p.m. It’s free, but registration is required as space is limited and you must be 18 years of age or older. Picture ID is required.
