GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WHTC) – Ice hockey will still be a part of the greater Holland area.
DP Fox Sports and Entertainment, who owns the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins, closed last Friday on the purchase of the Edge Ice Arena and assumed operational control of the Holland Township facility. It was built by Geerlings Development in 1998 and operated by the Holland-based entity until the sale.
Scott Geerlings told WHTC News that his group had been looking for a buyer for the 100 thousand square-foot building for about a year, and that several companies were interested in buying the property and converting it into manufacturing purposes, but he and his partners wanted to keep it as an ice arena that various clubs and teams, including Hope College’s club team, call home.
DP Fox also operates an ice arena in Grand Rapids’ Belknap Park, renaming it “Griff’s Icehouse” as the main practice facility for the top minor league hockey affiliate of the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings. Griffins’ majority owner Dan DeVos said in a statement that DP Fox will continue all current schedules for sports and public usage while looking at enhancing usage.
Terms of the purchase were not disclosed.
