LANSING, MI (WHTC) – Over 70,000 bags of trash are collected every year in the Adopt-A-Highway cleanup in Michigan.
The final cleanup will have over 3,200 groups picking up litter along highway roadsides. The program started in 1990 and there are three cleanup’s scheduled throughout the year with fall being the last. MDOT says the program is a $5 million annual value for the state.
MDOT reminds motorists to be on the lookout for volunteers wearing high-visibility, yellow-green safety vests. Volunteers are members of civic groups, businesses and families. Crew members have to be at least 12 years old and each group must have at least three people.
The final Adopt-A-Highway that will start Saturday, September 24 through Sunday, October 2.
Sections of highway are still available for adoption. Groups are asked to adopt a section of highway for at least two years and there is no fee to participate.
