HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – A tradition more than a half century old continues as a new era begins at Hope College today.
The 51st Community Day, celebrating the school’s ongoing relationship with the Holland community, begins with a full day of activities at Windmill Island Gardens from 9:30 AM to 5 PM. A picnic on the front lawn of DeVos Fieldhouse runs from 11 AM to 2 PM. Live music from the Holland American Legion Band and Karizma will be played; a spread that includes carved mojo pork loin, hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken tamales, vegetarian enchiladas and black bean burgers will be available; and attendees can have a chance to win prizes in drawings throughout the three-hour festivities.
The day climaxes with Hope’s season-opening football game at Ray & Sue Smith Stadium versus Monmouth of suburban Chicago. It will be the first contest for the Flying Dutchmen under the coaching guidance of Peter Stuursma, who left East Grand Rapids High for his Alma Mater following last December’s departure of Dean Kreps after 21 years at the helm.
A ticket to the football game will also be good for admittance to Windmill Island and to the picnic.
