PARK TWP., MI (WHTC) – The search should continue into a third full day for a 17-year-old Holland area boy missing and presumed drowned in the waters of Lake Michigan off of Holland State Park.
Weather conditions had improved on Friday morning as dive teams from the marine units of both the Ottawa County and Allegan County sheriff’s departments, augmented by Michigan State Police troopers, resumed their search of the area north of the pier where Christopher Mimis and three friends were swept off by waves on Wednesday evening. Two of the four were able to reach shore safely, while the body of 14-year-old Vincent Green was recovered yesterday.
Searchers say that rough waters that lingered through Thursday had hampered the search efforts, and murky water coming out of Lake Macatawa has cut into their visibility. Crews spent the better part of 10 hours before halting around 6 PM due to strengthening winds that was creating more treacherous conditions; they are hopeful of going back into the waters on Saturday.
