PORT SHELDON TWP., MI (WHTC) – A Twin Lake man is recovering from injuries suffered in a single-vehicle crash north of Holland overnight, but that may be just the beginning of his troubles.
According to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department, the unnamed man was driving southbound on Butternut Drive and had just passed Van Buren Street when he apparently reached for a lighter and lost control of a 1996 Ford Econoline van. The vehicle drifted to the right, and as it went onto the gravel shoulder, the driver overcorrected, causing the van to veer to the left and striking a tree alongside the northbound lanes.
The driver was taken to an undisclosed local hospital, where he was initially listed in stable condition. Following a check of the vehicle’s registration, the Grand Rapids Police Department told deputies that the van had recently been stolen from the Calder City.
The driver, once he is released from the hospital, is expected to face charges as the case remains under investigation.
