GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC) – The fireworks genie has been out of the lamp for some time now in Michigan, but communities are still trying to come to grips on dealing with those who shoot off explosives without a care in the world about their neighbors.
The Grand Haven City Council passed an emergency, temporary ordinance amendment this week restoring the ban on the use of consumer fireworks during this first Saturday in August as part of the Coast Guard Festival. Pure Michigan President Dave Lorenz, who will announce tomorrow’s festival parade for a 32nd consecutive year, understands this action. Appearing on “WHTC Morning News,” Lorenz said, “Unfortunately, as a lot of us feared, some people just simply take it too far and ruin it for everybody else. You’re going to find more and more communities in the state looking at these local ordinances to make sure that people are handling fireworks responsibly and with respect for others.”
The festival will hold its own fireworks show above Dewey Hill as scheduled tomorrow evening; the annual event ends on Sunday.
