LANSING, MI (WHTC) – Two men from Ottawa County are among those who have begun a quest to become Michigan State Police troopers.
Ryan Fras of Jenison and Jonathon Perry of Allendale, along with 48 others from across the state, began on Sunday a 23-week-long effort to earn their trooper status. They were selected following a “stringent” selection process that included a fitness test, background investigation and a hiring interview.
The 131st Trooper Recruit School at the State Police Training Academy in Lansing will include daily 5 AM wake-up calls, 10 PM lights-out deadlines, and training in firearms, water safety, defensive tactics, patrol techniques, report writing, ethics, first aid, criminal law, crime scene processing and precision driving. A December 22nd graduation is scheduled.
According to state police officials, this is the first time in the department’s 99-year history that three trooper recruit schools are underway at the same time, with graduation for the two earlier efforts set for August 26th and November 4th, respectively. The 21st Motor Carrier Officer Recruit School, along with the 132nd Trooper Recruit School both begin on August 28th.
