HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – A number of local and state elected officials have weighed in on yesterday’s violent escape attempt at the Berrien County Jail.
Governor Rick Snyder appeared at one of the afternoon news conferences with Sheriff Bailey. Republican presidential candidate took to Twitter to write, “Thoughts and prayers with the victims and their families.” Governor Snyder also tweeted, “Please join me in praying for those affected.”
St. Joseph Congressman Fred Upton told WHTC News that he was in that very courtroom several weeks ago as they graduated the 100th graduate of the drug court. Upton said he knows Judge LaSata very well and that he called him while the courtroom was in lockdown.
” Judge Lasata was in the middle of lockdown and I could hear the tremble in his voice and he told me what he knew. It’s just shocking.”
Upton not only knew Judge LaSata, but one of the bailiff’s who were killed. “This hits home pretty hard and it’s just tragic.”
State Senator John Proos and Representative Al Pscholka, who all come from the St. Joseph area all offered their condolences to the victims and their families.
