HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – The future of the Holland Civic Center will move forward through public funding and donations.
Last night at the council’s meeting, the council voted 5 to 3 to set the project’s budget after it was amended by Council member Brian Lynn. The amended resolution that passed will allow for up to $16.5 million for the project with $8.5 million to be supported by taxpayer investments and a bond amount of $10 million. The City will proceed with the Qualified Energy Conservation Bonds to fund the public portion of the project at less than 1% interest.
Four members of the panel – Mayor Nancy DeBoer, along with Jay Peters of the 2nd Ward, Dave Hoekstra of the 5th Ward and At-Large Councilman Quincy Byrd – supported the resolution, while Mike Trethewey of the 1st Ward, Brian Burch of the 2nd Ward, Brian Lynn of the 3rd Ward and Todd Whiteman of the 4th Ward opposed it. At-Large Councilman Wayne Klomparens was absent, as he was recovering from heart surgery late last month, which caused a deadlock that defeated the original resolution.
It is not known how the bond amount will impact the project.
