ZEELAND TWP., MI (WHTC) – A three-year-old girl suffered fatal injuries after being struck by a vehicle on a roadway east of Zeeland on Sunday afternoon.
Ottawa County Sheriff’s deputies say that Makenna Fraaza was with her mother and friends, standing on the side of 64th Avenue north of Quincy Street around 3 PM, when she apparently tried to run across the roadway and was hit by an approaching northbound SUV. The driver, 61-year-old Hugh Claver of Zeeland Township, said that he slammed on the brakes and swerved in an attempt to avoid striking the girl but failed.
First responders say that the child was unresponsive when she was taken to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids for treatment, while Claver was unhurt. Fraaza succumbed to her injuries at that hospital early on Sunday evening.
Investigators say that neither speed nor alcohol appeared to be factors in the incident, which remains under investigation.
