HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – An out-of-court settlement has been made with the City of Holland through the Holland Board of Public Works in a commercial dispute in the construction of the Wyoming Water Interconnect project.
The project was designed and constructed to provide an emergency water connection between the Holland and Wyoming water systems. It would allow one community to draw on the water resources of the other during times of emergency.
Construction began in January of 2012 and a few days later a leak was discovered. In September of 2013 the leakage accelerated at the facility causing it to flood 20 million gallons of water and collapse. The cities of Holland and Wyoming brought a suit against Prein and Newhof Inc, the engineering firm for the project as well as Grand River Construction, and Hartford Accident and Indemnity Company. Allied Mechanical Services, Inc also entered the suit as a third party defendant.
The parties reached a settlement out of court on June 24, 2016. Terms of the settlement include a payment of $1.9 million to cover the costs of reconstruction on the project.
Utility Services Director John Van Uffelen tells WHTC News that reconstruction has already begun and the contractor has installed new piping and base and the project should be finished by the end of 2016.
