HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – A Holland man was indicted Wednesday, June 8, on several charges stemming from mail thefts in Allegan, Ottawa and Van Buren counties over a five-month period.
Zachary Stephen Thomas, 32, is accused of stealing banks checks, credit card convenience checks and other types of checks. Thomas routinely stole bank account checks and credit card convenience checks mailed to Holland area residents. Thomas then forged the checks, deposited them into his own bank account, and withdrew large amounts of cash from his bank’s automated teller machine before the bank discovered that the checks were fraudulent. This is according to U.S. Attorney Pat Miles, Jr. in a written statement released to the media.
WZZM TV 13 reports that Chad Mitchell Weener, 34, of South Haven is named in the criminal complaint and is accused of stealing mail in Ottawa County during the month of April.
Thomas is scheduled to appear Thursday in U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids for arraignment charges of bank fraud, possession of stolen mail and identity theft. Weener has a detention hearing Thursday and said he pitched some of the stolen mail in a trash bin behind a Saugatuck gas station where investigators recovered over 1,000 pieces of mail belonging to Holland area residents.
