HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – Tulip Time is over, but there’s still a ton of events going on in the Holland area this week!
5/16 Monday: Team Trivia Mondays at the Curragh- A plethora of categories gives all team members their strong subject and ensures the useless knowledge stored away will finally be put to good use. What does matter is that everyone has fun! Curragh prizes are usually, $30 gift certificates for first place, $20 gift certificates for second and $10 gift certificates for third. 5/17 Tuesday: Diversity Alliance Summit on Race & Inclusion at Hope College- The Diversity Alliance Summit on Race & Inclusion examines the effects of racial disparities and strategies for their elimination at a day-long conference involving hundreds of participants from across the state of Michigan. Participants come to learn how discrimination affects communities economically and socially; understand how racial inclusion benefits everyone; learn tools to make a positive difference in our community; and join others to develop concrete plans for shaping a prosperous, inclusive future. 221 Columbia Ave., Holland; 8:30am to 3pm; $50 per person.
5/18 Wednesday: Ride of Silence at the Holland Civic Center- The Ride of Silence returns to Holland, honoring cyclists injured or killed while riding on public roadways, and raises awareness that cyclists and motorists both need to Share the Road. Black and red arm bands will be provided. Black to honor a cyclist killed, red to honor a cyclist injured. Support will be provided by Holland Public Safety/PD. Helmets are Mandatory, lights are recommended. Cross Country Cycles will join us and provide free basic Safety Checks for any rider who requests this. (NOT a tune-up) We hope to have food available for all riders when we return to the Civic Center. 50 West Eighth Street, Holland; 7:00 PM; Free.
5/19 Thursday: Grand Lady Riverboat Cruise at Grand River Park- Ottawa County Parks staff and Captain Bill Boynton will share their knowledge of the environmental and historical story of the river on this trip. Learn about new plans for the park properties along the river. Enjoy a close-up view of wildlife along the river. The afternoon cruises are family friendly and all ages are welcome. 5/20 Friday: Great Lakes Pastel Society: 2016 National Exhibition at the Holland Area Arts Council- In early May, 1997, five pastel artists met in Grand Rapids with the idea of creating an organization to promote the pastel medium. After becoming a nonprofit organization and a member of the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS), they hosted their first exhibit at the Grand Valley Artists gallery in November of 1997. Each member brought a painting to the show and Master Pastelist Larry Blovits critiqued each painting. From this start in 1997, the Great Lakes Pastel Society has grown to over 200 members in 12 states and host annual exhibitions around the region. This year, the Holland Area Arts Council is happy to host the exhibition in their Padnos Gallery. Artists from across the United States, members and nonmembers, submitted artwork. Sixty-four pieces were selected for the exhibition by juror, Lisa Ober, and thirteen pieces will be awarded additional honors. Join us for the opening reception on Friday, May 20 from 6 to 8 pm to celebrate their beautiful work and accomplishments. 150 E 8th St, Holland; Free.
5/21 Saturday: Zeeland Spring Peddlers’ Market in Downtown Zeeland- The Spring Peddlers’ Market will be entering its third reoccurring event in downtown Zeeland. The Market is an open air lifestyle market with over 40 vendors peddling their wears from vintage furniture and décor, architectural salvage, farm to table treats, handmade specialties, antiques, repurposed finds and live music. This event has drawn thousands of people into Zeeland to shop one of a kind items! 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
5/22 Sunday: Tulip City Comics & Toy Fare at the Holland Civic Center- Lakeshore Geeks Unite! The first annual Tulip City Comics & Toy Fare is here! Throughout the day panel discussions will be held on topics of comics, toy creation, and superheroes of Hollywood, presented by leaders in local businesses and community leaders. Also in our exhibit hall will be the Tulip City Cosplay Contest! Prizes for the top costumes will be awarded by our panel of judges in categories for kids 12 and under (contest at 12:00pm) and for adults (3:00pm)! Spectators and players alike will be able to enjoy the Magic: the Gathering tournament, presented by Chronocade, happening in the main event hall.
