HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – A memorial plaque has been installed on the M-231 Grand River bridge honoring Sgt. Henry E. Plant.
The Michigan Department of Transportation and the Grand Haven VFW along with the Ottawa County Planning and Performance Improvement Department collaborated to successfully install the plaque. The plaque commemorates Sgt. Henry E. Plant, the first from Ottawa County, and first Medal of Honor recipient in the United States, honored for rescuing regimental colors during battle.
The memorial plaque, which is placed on a “bump-out” overlook on the M-231 Bridge pathway, provides a brief peek into Ottawa County history. Visitors to the plaque will find breathtaking views of the Grand River and surrounding natural areas.
The M-231 Bridge pathway will soon be connected to Phase I of the Spoonville Trail, which is scheduled for completion September 2016. Phase I of the trail will extend one mile from the M-231 Bridge pathway, north, to Leonard Road.
The construction of Phase II of the Spoonville Trail is anticipated to begin Summer 2017. This is an additional two-mile section of non-motorized pathway that will connect Phase I, north, to Nunica.
Once completed, the Spoonville Trail will create a regional “loop” of non-motorized pathway, spanning from the shore of Lake Michigan to Grand Rapids by connecting two popular regional trails, the North Bank Trail and the Grand River Greenway.
