HOLLAND (WHTC) — Today (April 29, 2016) is Arbor Day — started by Detroiter J. Sterling Morton after he moved to Nebraska more than 100 years ago.
Today’s observance keeps the central them of the first official Arbor Day, celebrated in 1872 — getting people to plant at least one tree.
Herrick District Library is celebrating by giving away free seedings, with the help of the Holland Horticulture Club, Jonker’s Gardern and Family Fare, at both the Main and North libraries.
The libraries are also hosting drawings — limited to one per person and you must be present to win.

The Arbor Day Foundation sells low-cost seedlings, offers free advice on tree selection and care and promotes tree-city and tree-campus designations. Holland has been a Tree City for 35 years; Zeeland for 26 and Saugatuck for 10, according to the foundation’s records.
