HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – Public opinion may persuade the Holland City Council to change planned new signage for the Tulip City.
In a memo ahead of tonight’s scheduled biweekly business meeting, City Manager Ryan Cotton is suggesting that council members discuss beforehand proposed amendments to the Gateway Sign Plans and Pending Bid. The panel 13 months ago had approved a new gateway sign as part of a two-year process to “establish a city-wide wayfinding program,” according to Cotton, but “recent suggestions after the low bid was accepted last month prompted the need to consider additional refinements.”
The sign design professionals have prepared proposed changes that reincorporate the traditional Dutch “Welkom” that had been taken off in the original drawings. That omission drew a considerable public backlash over a perceived turning away from this area’s heritage.
Council members may vote tonight on the revised sign issue. A closed-door special session “to review pending litigation,” according to Cotton, is set at 5:30 PM, about 90 minutes ahead of the regular 7 PM meeting in Council Chambers at Holland City Hall.
