LANSING, MI (WHTC) – The first cleanup of the year on Michigan’s highways is Saturday, April 14 and will continue till April 23, 2016, so be on the lookout for volunteers alongside the highways with their bright colored vests on.
Adopt-A-Highway is in its 26th year with over 6,400 miles of highways currently adopted. According to MDOT, volunteers collect about 70,000 bags of trash annually. They come from all walks of life from various civic groups, businesses and families.
In 26 years, over 2 million bags of litter has been collected from the state’s roadsides. 382 groups have been in the program 25 years or more and volunteers pick up litter three times each year. Statewide, there will be a summer pickup from July 16 to July 24 and a fall pickup from September 24 to October 2, 2016.
Sections of highway are still available for adoption. There is no fee to participate.
