HOLLAND (WHTC) — One sure sign of spring is the official opening of Windmill Island Gardens, set for April 16 — but you can get a preview Saturday, April 9, 2016, during a coffee kletz and learn about plans for a community garden.
This is a Dutch tradition called volkstuinen, which portions out parcels of land to residents who need space to grow vegetables and flowers.
Saturday’s coffee kletz, which is free, starts at 10 a.m. and the presention will be over by 11 a.m.
This is the first year Windmill Island offers the commnity gardening opportunity and space is limited. Sign up online or call 616-355-1030 for details.
The coffee is free but of course city of Holland officials are hoping to persuade people to pay for Friend of Windmill Island Gardens memberships or donate toward the Island’s Endowment Fund.
