HOLLAND (WHTC) — Ottawa County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a rash of thefts this week in the 6100 block of Lincoln Street in Allendale Township. Three residents reported incidents that appear to have happened between 11 p.m. Monday and 5:15 a.m. Tuesday, according to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Capt. Mark Bennett.
First, a woman called to say someone had stolen her purse and a .38-caliber revolver from her home.
“The investigation showed the suspects entered the home through an unlocked garage door and removed several items from the garage and home area,” Bennett said. “The woman’s purse was located in the neighborhood after being discarded by the thieves. The handgun, however, is still outstanding.”
Bennett said since December, deputies have responded to a series of thefts: 20 from homes and seven from vehicles, all of which happened because people failed to lock doors.
In addition to Allendale Township, similar thefts have been reported in Talmadge and Wright townships.
Bennett advised people to make sure doors to the house, garage and vehicles are locked.
