HOLLAND (WHTC) — Stray cats can cause all sorts of problems and when cats are feral, they like to remain wild. But a dedicated group is helping reduce Ottawa County’s feral cat population.
Anyone who has left out a bowl of milk or food for a feral cat knows two things — without food, the cat’s going to die but with food you’re probably going to see more feral cats. That’s what animal lover Mary Beverly quickly learned.
“A neighbor died and she had wild cats,” Beverly told WHTC. “They weren’t getting fed and I couldn’t stand it.”
Beverly took on feeding the cats, but she also contacted A Feral Haven, a non-profit group based in Grand Haven, dedicated to humanely limiting Ottawa County’s feral cat population. The group neuters adult cats and socializes and rehomes kittens.
“Those kittens have all had their shots. They are microchipped and they’re spayed or neutered,” Beverly said. She rescued an estimated 20 kittens as she started caring for the feral cats in her Ottawa County neighborhood.
A fundraiser for A Feral Haven is set for 5 to 8 P-M today, Tuesday, March 29, 2016, at Culvers, 30-35 West Shore Drive.
