HOLLAND (WHTC) – U.S. federal investigators anounced they’ll drop the investigation into former Chesapeake CEO Aubrey McClendon, after the billionaire died in a fiery single car crash on Wednesday.
McClendon had been indicted on Tuesday for allegedly rigging bids to buy oil and natural gas leases in northwest Oklahoma. Federal officials say that although they will be dismissing the case against McClendon, they will continue to investigate the industry.
The oil and fracking magnate was better known in West Michigan as a Saugatuck township developer whose plans for more than 300 acres of land between the delicate Saugatuck Dunes and the Kalamazoo River created a long-running fight with residents and conservationists over land use.
Now the disposal of that land, listed for sale three years ago — is up in the air, according to a Holland Sentinel report.
