2/15 Monday: Winter Knickerbocker Film Series: The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet- Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, the film centers on T.S. Spivet (Kyle Catlett), a 10-year-old prodigy with a passion for maps. He lives on a ranch in Montana with his scientist mother (Helena Bonham Carter) and his cowboy father (Callum Keith Rennie), his twin brother and a sister. One day, T.S. receives a call from the Smithsonian Institution, telling him that he is the winner of the prestigious Baird prize for an invention of his. Invited to a reception in his honor, he sets out on a trip to reach Washington, D.C., without telling anyone. 2/17 Wednesday: The Art of Living with Joy Exhibition at Holland Area Arts Council- Holland artists Carolyn Stich and Alla Dickson invite you to shake the winter blues by joining them at their exhibit, “The Art of Living with Joy,” presented by the Holland Area Art’s Council. Vibrant colors and jovial subjects are evidence that Alla and Carolyn use art to express their happiness throughout the year. During the winter months, Carolyn Stich Studio and Alla Dickson Studio preserve the warmth and welcome of summer by creating art that reflects what they love. With these common goals in mind, they join together to share their joy with West Michigan. Using her extensive background in education and psychology, Alla brings her happiness to life with bold brush strokes and oil paints on canvas. Vibrant flowers and beautiful landscapes capturing glimpses of Alla’s joy will be on display in the gallery. Carolyn’s whimsical paintings, done in black ink and gouache, depict the everyday scenes from which she finds happiness. She will exhibit paintings of puppies and trains and everything in between in her usual lighthearted style. Opening on January 15, 2016 and running through February 27, “The Art of Living with Joy” combines the bright colors and individual styles of these two Holland artists who hope to spread their joy. 150 E 8th St, Holland; 10am-6pm; Free.

2/19 Friday: Holland Contra Dancing at the Ottawa County Fairgrounds- Join the Allegan Woods Folk Arts Cooperative for live music & dancing at the Holland Contra dance! You need not bring a partner, but bring all your friends! 2/20 Saturday: Holland Polar Plunge at the Ottawa County Fairgrounds- The Holland Polar Plunge is an annual event in which individuals dress up in zany costumes and jump into icy waters for athletes of Special Olympics Michigan. Participants register on our plunge website and raise funds for over 490 athletes of Allegan and Ottawa Counties. By participating in a Polar Plunge around the state you are helping to raise funds for over 21,000 athletes who participate in Special Olympics Michigan. Special Olympics Michigan is a year round program offering sports for those with intellectual disabilities. Although sports are the “vehicle,” the ultimate goal of Special Olympics is to help persons with intellectual disabilities participate and receive respect as members of their communities. 1286 Ottawa Beach Rd, Holland; 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; Donations encouraged.
