HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – Ottawa County Sheriff’s Deputies have identified the victim in a Friday morning fatal crash on 36th Avenue between Port Sheldon and Rosewood Street in Georgetown Township.
Rebecca Kunst, 50, died when her 1998 Toyota Corolla slid sideways on 36th Avenue into oncoming traffic. Her car was hit by 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Stephanie Thomas, 65, of Hudsonville. Thomas told police it was impossible to avoid hitting the Corolla. The impact to the rear passenger door of Kunst’s car sent the vehicle into a guard rail. Kunst was not wearing a seatbelt and was dead at the scene, according to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sgt. Steve Austin.
The passenger in Kunst’s car, a 19-year-old Chinese exchange student Jason Lou, suffered critical injuries and was taken to Spectrum Health Butterworth in Grand Rapids, Austin said. Lou was wearing his seatbelt.
Thomas and her passenger, Quinkai Zhang, 19, of Hudsonville, were both wearing seatbelts. Neither were injured in the crash, Austin said.
At the time of the crash, the road had a light dusting of snow, Austin said, noting the crash remains under investigation.
