HOLLAND (WHTC) — This weekend, Holland VFW Post 2144 will help dish out scholarships to high school students at the annual state convention in Lansing.
Marlene Gaitan, president of Post 2144’s Auxiliary, will be on hand to applaud the students.
“We entertain the kids. We take them to the Capitol because we’re going to be in Lansing and Saturday we have a banquet where we recognize them,” she said.
Students receive up to $5,000 for college.
Meanwhile, VFW volunteers in Holland are working on the dinner they host on the third Thursday of each month.
“We earmark our proceeds. This month it’s for the Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy scholarship winners,” she said. Other dinners support bingo games at the Grand Rapids Veterans Home, an annual ice cream social, holiday food and gift programs for veterans.
The dinner, set for 4:30 to 6 p.m. today, costs $7 for adults and $3.50 for children. VFW Post 21-44 is at 175 W. Eighth St. in Holland.
