HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – An inmate at the Ottawa County jail attempted suicide in his cell yesterday evening at approximately 8:30 p.m.
According to Captain Mark Bennett with the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, a 20-year-old Grand Haven Township man was found unresponsive in his cell by nearby inmates who were out of their cells on free time when they noticed the inmate hadn’t left his cell.
The inmates alerted jail staff of the problem and deputies along with medical personnel responded to the cell to render aid. Although unresponsive, the inmate showed signs of life and was transported to Holland Community Hospital where he is being treated.
Preliminary investigation shows the 20-year-old attempted to hang himself inside of his cell.
The inmate has been in the Ottawa County Jail since December 1 of 2015 on several charges of property related crimes.
Sheriff’s detectives are investigating the incident which remains open.
