1/18 Monday: Civil Rights Lecture with David A. Paul at Dimnent Memorial Chapel- Keynote speaker is Hope College graduate David A. Paul. His lecture, “Dare to be BOLD,” will examine King’s early life and career and “what causes a man to aggressively fight against injustice.” A particular focus will be Dr. King’s courage to lead despite continuous and real threats to his life. 277 College Ave., Holland; 7pm; Free.
1/19 Tuesday: 440: Billy Mayer Sabbatical Art Show at DePree Art Center and Gallery- The De Pree Art Center and Gallery at Hope College will feature “440,” an exhibition of sculpture in a variety of media by faculty member Billy Mayer, from Monday, Jan. 11, through Thursday, Feb. 11. The title of the exhibition derives from 440 hertz, the musical note that since 1936 has been broadcast shortly after the top of the hour by WWV and WWVH, which are shortwave radio stations of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, to aid orchestras in tuning their instruments. 160 East 12th St, Holland; 10am-5pm; Free.
1/20 Wednesday: National Museum Selfie Day at the Kruizenga Art Museum- Come celebrate National Museum Selfie Day at the Kruizenga Art Museum. 1/21 Thursday: Italian Wine Tasting at Sandy Point Beach House- Join Sandy Point Beach House for their second wine tasting of the season! 1/22 Friday: Hope College Dance Department: Lucky Plush Dance Concert at Knickerbocker Theatre- Lucky Plush Productions (LPP) is a Chicago-based dance theater company led by founder and Artistic Director Julia Rhoads. LPP is committed to provoking and supporting an immediacy of presence – a palpable liveness – shared by performers in real-time with audiences. The company is equally dedicated to creating work that is richly complex while also being broadly accessible. Critics and audiences alike recognize LPP for its complex choreography, moving content, surprising humor, and incisive commentary on contemporary culture. 1/23 Saturday: Koffie Kletz at Windmill Island Gardens- Need a little R&R this January? Refurbishments & Refreshments (R&R) is a community update on the restoration of the Dutch cultural attractions at Windmill Island Gardens. On January 23, interested community members can receive a report on the past, present and future work on the windmill, street organ and children’s carousel. Visitors will receive a behind-the-scenes look at off-season work being done in preparation for Tulip Time and the summer season. This event will be the first in a new series of events – Koffie Kletz at Windmill Island Gardens. During these events, we invite community members to learn about topics relevant to Dutch culture, Holland culture and Windmill Island Gardens. Each Kletz will feature a new topic with a presentation and discussion time over coffee. 1/24 Sunday: Hope College Faculty Recital: Genevieve Beaulieu, Bassoon at Jack H. Miller Center for the Arts: Howard Recital Hall, 120- Genevieve Beaulieu joined Hope College as Instructor of Bassoon in January of 2015. She graduated from Ohio State University with her Bachelor’s in Bassoon Performance where she studied with Karrie Pierson and from Michigan State University with her Master’s in Bassoon Performance where she studied with Michael Kroth. In addition to frequently performing with the Grand Rapids, Lansing, Holland, West Michigan, and Kalamazoo symphonies, Genevieve holds the principal bassoon position with Midland Symphony Orchestra and the second bassoon position with Traverse Symphony Orchestra. She maintains a private studio in both Holland and Lansing and is on faculty at Michigan State’s Community Music School. 221 Columbia Ave., Holland; 2pm; Free.
