The League of Women Voters in Holland will host a forum on Jan. 26 for the Michigan House of Representatives 80th district seat.
The 80th district seat was vacated when Republican Cindy Gamrat was expelled in September after a sex scandal involved another state representative, Todd Courser, erupted. Gamrat failed to retain voters’ confidence in a primary runoff, losing to another Republican, Mary Whiteford.
Whiteford now faces a special election on March 8, against Democrat David Gernant and Libertarian Arnis Davidson to fill the seat.
Davidson, Gernant and Whiteford are expected to be at the 80th District Candidate Forum, set for 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2016 at Fennville High School’s Auditorium, 5 Memorial Drive in Fennville.
The event is public and those present can pose questions to the candidates. A recording of the forum will be posted on the League of Women Voters of Holland’s website.
The Special Election to fill this vacancy will be held on Tuesday, March 8, the same day as the Michigan Presidential Primary. Absentee ballots will be available starting the week of Jan. 25.
The League of Women Voters is a national non-partisan organization dedicated to promoting “political responsibility through informed and active participation of citizens in government,” according to a written statement from the group.
