HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – Two bicyclists were injured in two separate vehicle accidents within a half hour time frame in Holland yesterday afternoon. The first accident took place on James Street west of 120th Avenue at approximately 1:30 p.m. It involved a postal service delivery vehicle driven by 61-year-old David Wicks of Holland. The bicyclist injured in the crash was 39-year-old Eric Aittama of Zeeland. Before the accident, Wicks was attempting to enter James Street with the postal truck from a private business on the south side of the road. Wicks had to cross a combination sidewalk/bicycle path on which Aittama was travelling west on. As Wicks was pulling into traffic, he struck Aittama. The bicyclist suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Zeeland Hospital.
During another bicycle accident in Holland yesterday, Kimberly Harter, 55, of Holland struck Bicyclist Ryan Russell, 28, at 2p.m. Harter had been stopped on Howard Avenue waiting for traffic to clear so she could make a south bound turn onto River Street. She stated to Ottawa County Sheriff deputies that she did not see Russell attempt to cross Howard on River and struck him while pulling out into traffic. Russell was not wearing a bike helmet and suffered non-life-threatening injuries to his face and head. He was taken to Holland Hospital after the accident.
