Holland Mayor Nancy DeBoer took her oath of office Monday, along with fellow victors of last week’s city council election.
About 40 people were on hand to applaud DeBoer, Holland’s first female mayor during a brief city hall ceremony. Holland’s deputy clerk Anna Perales presided over what she said was the best-attended swearing-in ceremony she’s seen in her 16 years on the job.
“This has been the largest (audience) it’s normally the council members only,” Perales said. “So this was an exciting moment tonight, I think. So, Nancy had a lot of her supporters here. It was nice to see.“
Others pledging to uphold the law of the land were veteran councilmen: Jay Peters, Dave Hoekstra, Wayne Klomparens and a newcomer, 24-year-old Bryan Lynn.
Perales read a short biography of each of the officials being sworn in. After DeBoer’s soft-spoken assent, the room erupted in applause.
Councilmen Todd Whiteman and Brian Burch, City Manager Ryan Cotton, Peg VanGrouw and entrepreneur Shawn M. Miller were among attendees.
Holland City Council has 30 days to fill DeBoer’s now-vacant at-large council seat.
