HOLLAND TWP., MI (WHTC) – Firefighters from three departments needed about two hours to bring a midday blaze at the Pompa Vidals townhouse complex on Holland’s North Side under control. Maria Gutierrez-Fuentes, a 60-year-old woman, and her two-year-old granddaughter Layla Cahue-Romero were taken to Spectrum-Butterworth Hospital in serious condition for treatment of burns. All other residents were able to escape safely, and no crew members were injured. Investigators didn’t immediately determine a cause for the fire or make any initial damage estimate, but they believe that work on a gas-fueled water heater may have been a factor. All of the complex’ residents have been moved to temporary shelters as utility repairs may take several days to complete.
