ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC) – The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office and Deputies is reminding drivers that this is the time of year when they see the highest volume of car/deer accidents.
Last year in Allegan County 831 crashes involved deer. 16 people were injured as a result of those crashes. Below are tips to remind you to take extra caution as you travel Allegan County Roads.
Tips to Avoid a Car Deer Crash and minimize the possibility of injury:
- If you see a deer, slow down. There is often another close behind.
- Be especially careful when traveling through wooded areas and farmland, especially around dawn and dusk.
- Use your high beams whenever possible. You may spot deer sooner providing you more time to react.
- Always wear your seatbelt.
- If a deer collision is unavoidable, brake firmly, keep both hands on the wheel, and remain in your lane.
- Avoid swerving, it often results in a loss of control and more sever vehicle damage and personal injury from leaving the roadway and striking trees or going into a ditch and rolling over.
The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office says while there is no way to avoid many of these car/deer accidents, there are ways to minimize the chances of being involved in one.
