KALAMAZOO, MI (WHTC) – The State Senate has approved a bill that would outlaw local bans on particular breeds of dogs. 27-communities in Michigan have outlawed ownership of specific breeds, mostly pit-bulls because of horrifying attacks and other incidents.
It passed 25 to 11. Cities would still be able to require that dogs only be put out on a leash and that they be licensed, but not pick on any particular breeds.
Dog groups say it’s discrimination and violates a dog owners rights. Opponents say once again the state is overstepping its authority, and imposing one-size-fits-all rules on local communities facing specific situations. The legislation now heads to the State House.
