ST. IGNACE, MI (WHTC) – A St. Ignace teenager was killed by a drunk driver after his homecoming dance on Friday night.
Mitch Snyder, 17, who played on the LaSalle High School football team, leading them to their sixth straight win Friday night, was killed in a head-on crash on Mackinac Trail in St. Ignace.
The other driver Darrel Lovegrove, a 40-year-old St. Ignace man was treated at Mackinac Straits hospital and then jailed for drunken driving. His bond was set at $500,000. He has been charged with drunken driving causing death, which carries a 15-year felony and a third-offense drunken driving, a five-year felony, authorities said.
The small community is devastated and a vigil was held on Sunday. Sporting events were cancelled on Monday, but students returned to school and counselors were on hand if needed.
Snyder leaves behind his parents, an older brother and a sister in middle school.
