FRUITPORT, MI (WHTC) – Charges are pending for Kalani Tanis, 19, of Hudsonville who allegedly attempted to carjack and assault a woman in Fruitport on Saturday afternoon while her two-year-old son was in a rear-seat child restraint.
Tanis has been charged with two counts of attempted unlawful imprisonment and one count of attempted use of a dangerous weapon, that being self-defense spray. Public Safety officials say that the victim screamed and honked the vehicle’s horn when the masked suspect in black climbed into the backseat with the woman and the son.
The suspect then fled into a wooded area and attempted to throw off pursuers by changing into all white clothes, but responding officers were able to find the suspect nearby and arrested him.
The case remains under investigation. Police say there’s no connection between the victim and Tanis.
