HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – The start of the school year has Holland Public Schools dealing with a bigger enrollment drop than they predicted this fall.
Steve Grose, president of the school board, says they are not laying off any teachers despite expecting a budget deficit between 500 – and 600-thousand dollars.
The district says more school options and a decline in births during the recession is blamed for the decline. They had expected to lose 94 students this school year, but now have 174 fewer.
Open positions will not be filled and classrooms will be merged to make up for the deficit.
