New data that has been collected by State Farm Insurance shows that the odds of hitting a deer for Michigan residents is lower than it has been in past years. The new statistics were taken from claims data and state licensed driver counts from the Federal Highway Administration.
According to the study, Michigan drivers are nearly 3.1 percent less likely to collide with a deer than they were last year. The odds drivers will hit a deer in Michigan are 1 out of 97, compared to the national average of 1 in 169.
State Farm also ranked the states in most likely to have a collision involving a deer, where Michigan took the number 10 spot. At the top of the list is West Virginia, where a deer collision is likely to happen 1 in 44. To avoid becoming a statistic, drivers are urged to use extra caution in known deer zones and to always wear a seatbelt while in a vehicle.
