ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC) – WHTC News has learned that ousted state Representative Cindy Gamrat of Plainwell has submitted paperwork with the Allegan County Clerk’s office to run for the Republican nomination in a special primary on November 3rd.
Last Friday, she became just the fourth state lawmaker in history to be expelled for violating House rules in relation to covering up an adulterous affair with fellow freshman Republican Todd Courser of Lapeer, necessitating the primary and a special March 8th general election to fill her seat. Under the state Constitution, Gamrat can seek election despite her expulsion.
She becomes the fifth Republican to file before tomorrow’s deadline for the primary election, joining Allegan County GOP Vice-Chair Mary Whiteford, whom Gamrat defeated in last year’s primary to win the House seat, former Allegan County Commissioner Bill Sage, Shannon Szukala of the River City Patriots and Allegan County Circuit Court Law Clerk Kevin Travis. Current Commissioner Jim Storey, who announced his candidacy on Monday, has reportedly yet to file his paperwork.
According to MIRS News, a David Athena had asked for paperwork to file as a Democrat, but it is not yet known if he has submitted that paperwork, and not much is known about him.
