HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – Plans to build a pedestrian bridge connecting Windmill Island and Holland Township will cost much more than expected.
City council said Wednesday night that the project could top $4 million, compared to an engineer’s initial estimate of $2.63 million. Holland Mayor Robert Vande Vusse said the increased price tag is due to unexpected construction costs and the Michigan Department of Transportation’s requirements for a pedestrian bridge.
“Once they did some soil borings, they found they have to go down about 40 feet through the muck,” said the mayor on WHTC’s Morning Show.
City and township officials will be meeting next week to assess options and consider boosting their funding support for the project.
