Chlorine Gas Incident at GR Water Plant Near Grand Haven

GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC) – Authorities say that a chemical accident at the City of Grand Rapids’ water filtration plant south of Grand Haven this morning caused no injuries and no tainting of the water supply. About 800 gallons of fluoride was accidently mixed with 250 gallons of hypochlorite in a tank at the Lake Michigan Drive facility, causing a chlorine gas to be released. Hazmat crews joined with plant employees and local firefighters in bringing the situation under control as the gas is allowed to vent out at safe levels.
