HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – The Lakeshore sports community is mourning the death of long-time teacher, coach and broadcaster Ron Wetherbee, who passed away at age 78 on Friday following a brief illness.
A Hope College graduate, he helped start the West Ottawa football program, with its first varsity season in 1960, after a brief stint at Coopersville, and he was inducted into the Michigan High School Football Association Coaches Hall of Fame in 1996. Mr. Wetherbee also called high school and Hope College football and basketball games on WHTC and WYVN from 1972 through last fall, along with Tulip Time Festival parades.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, August 5, at Rose Park Reformed Church. Visitation is 7-9 PM on Monday and 7-9 PM on Tuesday at the Yntema Funeral Home in Zeeland. Memorial contributions may be made to Hope College.
