HOLLAND (WHTC) – The newest member of the Holland City Council is …. no one.
Council members were unable Wednesday to agree on a candidate to fill a vacancy representing the city’s Fourth Ward for the next three months. In two separate votes, Judy Tuinenga received four votes, while Shawn Miller received three votes. According to city charter, five votes are needed to appoint someone to a council seat. Council members Dave Hoekstra, Brian Burch, Wayne Klomparens and Jay Peters voted for Tuinenga, while Mayor Bob VandeVusse, who previously represented the Fourth Ward on council, was joined by council members Nancy DeBoer and Mike Trethewey in voting for Miller, who was appointed to the council once before, in 2011 after the resignation of Jerome Thomas-Kobes. After the second vote, the council voted unanimously to leave the seat open until the November election. Donald Martin and Brian Lynn are running for the Fourth Ward in the November election. Martin applied for the opening but was not nominated, while Les Lanser’s name was submitted for nomination, but did not receive a second.
