HOLLAND TWP, MI (WHTC) – The dawn’s early glare could have attributed to a three-vehicle pileup west of Zeeland this morning that critically injured a 51-year-old Holland Township man and hospitalized three others.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Brent Converse, Antonio Chavez was stopped on eastbound Chicago Drive, waiting for the traffic light to turn green on Van Hill Drive, when Monique Keels’ car rammed into his from behind. Keels may have been blinded by the sun shining directly into her and obscuring her vision. The force of the collision pushed Chavez’ automobile into the path of a westbound dump truck, driven by David Plowman.
Rescue crews had to extricated Chavez from his car, and he was airlifted to Spectrum-Butterworth Hospital. A passenger of his, 17-year-old Alondra Chavez, along with the other two drivers – the 37-year-old Keels of Holland and the 38-year-old Plowman of Fennville – were all taken to Holland Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Deputies closed Chicago Drive between 112th and 104th Avenues for three hours, and the investigation into the crash continues.
