HOLLAND (WHTC) – The former Washington Elementary School building in Holland could soon be transformed into upscale apartment units. The Holland school board Monday voted 5-1 to authorize Superintendent Brian Davis to work out details of a purchase agreement with Colliers International and Fusion Properties for the building on West 11th Street. Colliers has proposed converting the 87-year-old building into 32-to-36 apartment units, ranging from one to three bedrooms. Rents would start at $925 a month and could go as high as $1,450, according to Kris DePree of Colliers. School board Trustee Susan DeJong called the proposal “a good use of greenspace and a wonderful use of an older building.” Washington has not been used as a school since it was shut down in 2005 as part of the district’s Focus Schools reorganization. It had been used as the district’s administrative offices until last November, when the district moved into new offices at Holland High School. A purchase agreement is expected to be approved next month and construction could begin next spring.
