PARK TWP., MI (WHTC) – Good news from state officials in their search for crayfish on Lake Macatawa. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Division found no red swamp crayfish when they pulled traps out of Lake Macatawa yesterday. After finding several dead red swamp crayfish in the lake earlier this week, officials have been closely monitoring the area for any signs of the invasive species. Red swamp crayfish are known for quickly outcompeting local crayfish when invading an area, prompting swift action by the DNR to cut off any sources of the creatures. Despite the good news, Elyse Walter, Communications Specialist for the DNR, says the fight is not quite over. The agency’s law enforcement division is working with live bait markets to prohibit the sale of live red swamp crayfish.
