HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – The West Ottawa Board of Education will have a hearing this Tuesday, June 23 to discuss a variety of topics and take a vote on a new $70 million budget for the 2015-2016 school year. This budget includes a $1.41 million deficit that will be covered by the school board’s savings account, according to a Holland Sentinel report.
At the end of the next school year, West Ottawa plans to have $10.9 million left in the proposed budget if they were able to judge their spending right. To help save money, some staff positions may not be replaced after people retire. Also, the district is expecting less children enrolled for the next school year due in part to a large 2015 graduating class and new kindergarten enrollment cutoff dates.
Other topics to be covered in the meeting will be a design presentation on Waukazoo Elementary, contracts to clear up the asbestos and the redesign of the now-closed Glerum Elementary, and a proposal for new orchestra and band instruments for the district. The budget hearing will take place at 5:30 pm on Tuesday, with the regular board meeting following at 6pm.
