GRAND HAVEN TOWNSHIP (WHTC) – A 47-year-old West Olive man escaped injury Monday when his new pickup truck was struck by a train on Winans Street at US-31 south of Grand Haven. Sergeant Steve Austin of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department says Arturo Martinez was stopped on the track just west of U.S. 31, waiting for a car in front of him to turn, about 10:20 a.m. when the crash occured. Martinez says he didn’t see the train coming, which struck the pickup’s front end. He was wearing a seat belt. Austin says the train was traveling at less than 25 miles per hour and the engineer attempted to stop the train before striking the pickup. The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department is investigating.
