KALAMAZOO, MI (WHTC) – For the first time in Michigan, a white-tailed deer has tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease in the wild.
The infected deer was discovered in Ingham County. the DNT is proposing that any deer taken during hunting season from that area undergo manadatory testing, and that deer baiting be banned in Ingham, Clinton and Shiawasee counties to reduce the chance that deer will congregate and spread the fatal ailment.
Seven years ago a case of CWD appeared in a deer breeding operaton in Kent County, making it easier to control.
It’s similar to Mad Cow Disease, infecting the brains, triggering lesions that eventually cause death, and can cause mass kill-offs if left unchecked.
It does not effect humans.
