HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) –
This Monday is Memorial Day, and many Holland-area residents will want to celebrate the unofficial first day of summer by grilling out, camping, and enjoying the warm weather we’ve been having for the last week.
However, with the threat of thunderstorms and dangerous conditions in Lake Michigan, more people might want to stay indoors for the holiday. According to the Great Lake Environmental Research Laboratory, Lake Michigan’s average water temperature is running about a degree or so lower than normal for this time of year.
On top of that, three to five-foot waves are expected along the lakeshore from Holland State Park up to Ludington State Park throughout the weekend with heavy south winds. This forecast and a lake temperature in the upper 40s provides a high risk for swimmers for Memorial Day weekend.
